Interior Design in 2010

by James Rockford on March 5, 2010

In 2010, as with 2009, trends in Interior Design will be dominated by the poor economic situation. People will be looking more to entertaining at home instead of eating out and seeking money-saving solutions to home decorating. Sustainability of materials along with the recycling and repurposing of items will have a large effect on trends this year. Here are a few of our 2010 predictions.

Natural Materials – 2010 will see great popularity in the use of natural materials. Solid wood floors are already popular in many homes and this trend will continue, however this year will see natural materials becoming more popular throughout the home. Solid wood furniture with a visible grain and natural stone products will prevail over modern alternatives such as man-made boards, plastic or glass. Popular wood products this year will be eastern hardwoods such as acacia or sheesham along with a welcome return in popularity for untreated pine furniture.

Vintage Style – Out with the new, in with the old! Modern hard styling is out this year, replaced with vintage country looks. Particular favourites include: Animal skin or shag-pile rugs, Chesterfield wing chairs, antique and eastern influenced rustic pieces and printed fabric and wallpapers. Combine classic pieces in a modern room to create a diverse, expensive look with a warm and comfortable feel.

Green – The colour for 2010 will be green, whether as a soft turquoise or a more vibrant tone. Bold floral printed fabrics will be popular. Try mixing green or turquoise as an accent colour with soft shades of cream or off whites. Alternatively, contrast a light green decor with splashes of orange or purple accents.

Green, again – We’ve already mentioned the colour but this time we mean “eco-friendly”. Sustainable is no longer for eco-mentalists and some great sustainable products this way come. Look out for sustainable wood items such as bamboo and mango wood. Recycled items are also really hot, especially recycled or repurposed furniture and accessories, craft pieces and second-hand items given a new lease of life. Not so much recycled tin cans, more repainted or re-upholstered classic pieces and inventive use of materials.

Staying in – Staying in is the new going out. Since the recent economic downturn, trend has shifted towards entertaining at home and this will continue throughout 2010. Creating a warm, welcoming space relies on comfortable, stylish designs. Create a real talking point by repurposing or recycling an old piece of furniture such as covering a worn, old sofa in stylish, modern fabric. Check out interior design blogs and magazines for inspiration.

Outdoor Entertainment – This summer will be big for outdoor entertaining, weather permitting, and the same design trends will be popular outdoors as well as in such as solid wooden garden furniture, eastern influenced planting and repurposed items.

These predictions are not a list of must-buys, these are simply a list of styles and products we think will be popular in 2010. Just remember, make your home your own. Decorate your home the way you like it and others will like it too. A space decorated with love and care with pieces and colours that suit your personality will look natural, whereas a space styled to please others or from a picture in a glossy magazine can look forced.
