Did you know that you can create your own local TV show using the studio of the local cable TV company?
It’s called Local Access or Public Access. Usually the cable company operates a local TV production studio that members of the public can use to produce and air their own shows. Generally, you must take a production course at the studio, but these are usually free or cost only a nominal amount.
These courses can be a lot of fun. They show you how to use the cameras, adjust the lights, put on people’s microphones, and so on. You’ll also learn how to operate “the board,” the master control center of the TV production studio.
It takes a lot of work to produce a show, so not everyone who graduates will want to create their own shows. But many of them will volunteer to be crew members of other people’s shows. This is how a lot of local access producers find the people necessary to produce a show.
The best way to get people to watch your show is to make it entertaining and/or informative. And the best way to get free publicity from creating your own show is to have it relate in some way to what you do.
Another advantage of having your own show is that it gives you material to use to make your “reel,” as it is called, You can use segments from your TV appearances to demonstrate how well you can perform in front of the camera. Having a good real can help you to get on local network shows, such as newscasts. You can also use your reel as part of your press kit. If you are thinking of trying to get publicity through national talk shows, it is critical to show them a good reel in order to get them to book you.
When you perform in your own local talk show, you can watch the playback and see how you come across on camera. It gives you the opportunity to adjust your style before appearing on a big, national show. This alone, can save you a lot of potential embarrassment.
